Increased pedestrian safety and the improvement of pedestrian mobility are the main advantage of proposed works for Westport, according to town manager Martin Keating.

Developments at Rosmoney pier have been completed and the newly constructed pontoon was finally commissioned for public use on Wednesday last.

The issue of housing Traveller families came up at the November meeting of the housing SPC of Mayo County Council this week. Both Cllr Gerry Ginty and Cllr Eddie Staunton brought up the issue at Thursday morning’s meeting. Director of services for Mayo County Council, Martin Keating, told the members: “We will be having a meeting of the local Traveller consultative committee in December to review the progress we have made this year and will report to this SPC in the new year.”

Mayo County Council will be carrying out a “statutory assessment of housing needs” next year for the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. Westport is co-ordinating a number of ideas in preparation of The Gathering 2013—a year long celebration, which will encourage as many of the Diaspora as possible to return to the country, According to festival co-ordinator Dermot Langan, October 31 is the deadline for all ideas so that a calendar of events can then be prepared for the Westport area. Mr Langan said: “as Westport is the best place to live it is also the best place to gather.”

Works being carried out at the historic Rockies site in Westport has caused outrage among concerned locals, who in a letter distributed to local representatives, outlined that they were “disturbed by the lack of respect shown to an ancestral resting place” as “human remains have been exposed and scattered about the site.”

Westport town councillor Christy Hyland has hit out at how the council is dealing with antisocial behaviour in local authority houses in the town. At the town council meeting last Thursday, Cllr Hyland said: ‘This is my fifth time bringing up anti-social behaviour.”

Councillor Margaret Adams said that she was disappointed that the refurbishment project of the former Convent of Mercy in Westport — where the town’s civic offices are planned to relocate to — will be not be completed sooner then mid-2014.

Westport Town Council is to provide €100,000 in funding towards the Westport United Community Development Ltd.
